California Highway Patrol officers in Oakland scored a two-fer when they nabbed a suspect, thus recovering a pair of stolen vehicles and two loaded firearms earlier this month. The action unfolded in the vicinity of San Leandro Street near Hegenberger Road when officers clocked a license plate-less white Infiniti G37, according to the official CHP Oakland Area Facebook page. Things went from zero to sixty when the driver decided to give the cops the slip, touching off a pursuit.
In a jaw-dropping development that unfolded on May 3, the chase accelerated swiftly, partly thanks to the keen eye in the sky from the Oakland PD's air unit. The runaway ride came to a screeching halt at Howard Street and E. 8th Street. The frantic driver ditched the Infiniti and switched to a black and white Ford Crown Victoria with deceiving aftermarket cop lights, as if lifted from a Hollywood script.
Undeterred by his Houdini act, the CHP units swooped in and cornered Mr. Runner in the Crown Victoria, capturing him without further drama. With the perp in custody, a search turned up a backpack that laid bare the driver's unsavory swag: two loaded guns, drugs, and parading drug paraphernalia, along with extra ammo that was found playing hide-and-seek in both vehicles. The tunes of justice played loud as the driver was escorted to Santa Rita Jail, facing the music with a litany of felony and misdemeanor charges.
Living up to their creed of "Safety, Service, and Security," the CHP's relentless pursuit led to a takedown with all the elements of a classic car chase-cum-crime bust.
