The city of Hayward plans an overnight closure of the I-880 freeway ramps as part of the ongoing construction on West Winton Avenue tonight. This initiative is part of a broader effort to improve the city's infrastructure under the cover of darkness, minimizing disruption to daytime traffic, per the City of Hayward.

The repaving project spans across West Winton Avenue, from Southland Drive to Santa Clara Street. It will be carried out overnight from 8 p.m. tonight to 5 a.m. Friday with ramps being closed during this period. The repaving will continue during the same hours into Saturday with at least one lane remaining open to aid traffic.

This construction is part of the City of Hayward's annual pavement improvement efforts for Fiscal Year 2023. Using a $16 million budget, issues of spot repairs, micro resurfacing, pavement grinding and overlay, curb-ramp upgrades, and restriping, including bike lane and crosswalk enhancements will be addressed. In addition, the work is expected to cover over 52 lane miles across 111 street segments.

The street segments chosen for rehabilitation result from a careful evaluation of pavement conditions, external feedback, City Council insights, and neighborhood groupings maximizing efficiency. Funding for this project derives from several sources, including Alameda County Measure B and BB transportation sales tax revenue, gas tax revenue, state vehicle registration fees, other street system improvement funds, and the California Road Repair and Accountability Act of 2017.
