On October 11, a joint mission involving the Holyoke Police Narcotics bureau, the Western Mass FBI Gang Task Force, Hampden County Sherriff's, DEA, HSI, ATF, and the Mass State Police Gang Unit, located children enduring horrendous living conditions in Holyoke, Massachusetts. As a component of Operation Safe Streets, law enforcement officials executed a search warrant at a property and arrested four individuals for narcotics-related offenses, simultaneously unveiling shocking living conditions.
During the operation, officers arrested two individuals outside 149 Essex Street 2L, as well to the two found inside the residence. As the officers entered the apartment, they discovered a shocking scene —the residence was unsanitary and lacked necessities, making it barely habitable. Amidst the filth, several children were discovered which prompted immediate protective action.
With the terrible conditions confirmed, the Holyoke Police Department promptly contacted the board of health which declared the dwelling unfit for habitation. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, the Department of Children and Families were alerted and arrived on scene to place the children into temporary custody until further assessments could be conducted. Four individuals were arrested for narcotics-related offenses, and two also face three counts each of reckless endangerment of a child.
