On October 14th, a male adult undergoing a mental health incident trespassed a neighbor's residence on the 200 block of Madison, Redwood City, thereby causing an extensive standoff between him and police authorities. According to the Redwood City Police Department press release, officers who had received Critical Incident Training (CIT) first responded to the call and tried to communicate and de-escalate the situation.
The press release delineates that along with CIT officers, members of the Crisis Negotiations Unit (CNU) of the Redwood City Police Department were dispatched; both groups are specialize in crisis communication and de-escalation strategies. Moreover, a mental health expert was at the location, aiding officers in their engagement with the man.
Four hours into the incident, the man left the house and began yelling at the officers. They subsequently hit him in the lower chest with a non-lethal 40 millimeter round to prevent any potential harm, and thus, were able to detain him. He was then taken to San Mateo County General Hospital for a mental health assessment and treatment of minor injuries.
