Recently, an outbreak of Salmonella illness tied directly to the consumption of raw milk and milk products from a Fresno-based producer has resulted in nine confirmed cases, according to San Diego County health officials. The victims range in age from 1 to 41 years, with three children being hospitalized, as reported by County News Center.

Upon confirming the link between the outbreak and the products from Raw Farm LLC, the County of San Diego Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA) promptly warned the public to stop consumption and encouraged immediate disposal of these products. Dr. Seema Shah, medical director of the County’s Epidemiology & Immunization Services Branch, also stressed the significance of hygiene and urged affected individuals to quickly get medical attention.

Symptoms of Salmonella, bacteria found in the intestines of humans and animals, usually appear within six hours to six days after consuming contaminated food. Individuals afflicted can expect to experience diarrhea, stomach cramps, fever, nausea, and vomiting lasting about 4-7 days. Hospitalization might become necessary in more severe cases.

Pasteurization, the process used to heat milk in order to kill harmful germs, is the only effective method for eliminating most bacteria in raw milk products, including Salmonella, Listeria, E. coli and other harmful organisms. Yet, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends against consuming raw milk due to potential risk. Despite this, it is worth noting that pasteurization doesn't significantly alter the nutritional value of dairy products.

Vulnerable populations such as adults aged 65 years and older, children younger than 5, and individuals with weaker immune systems are the most susceptible to severe illness from exposure. With the recent Raw Farm LLC-related outbreak, it becomes increasingly crucial for consumers to heed health official warnings and exercise caution.

Investigations into the outbreak are currently underway. The County of San Diego HHSA, California Department of Public Health (CDPH) and California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) are jointly conducting enquiries. Should consumers believe they have been affected, contacting their healthcare providers is encouraged.
