There's been a noticeable uptick in financial scams targeting elder citizens. A case in San Diego where a senior woman was conned out of $200,000 highlighted the nefarious tactics being employed by scammers, making it clear that more awareness and action are needed to protect our vulnerable seniors.

Today, the San Diego County District Attorney's Office announced that Zhi Gao, a courier affiliated with a criminal network that targets elders, is charged with several counts, including attempted grand theft and attempted receiving stolen property.

Scams often begin as a "tech support" ruse, utilizing a genuine-looking request to repair a target's computer to lure them in. In this instance, the victim's computer froze followed by a popup claiming to be from Microsoft. According to the District Attorney's Office, the victim paid an initial $120 to the fraudulent party before being maneuvered into a "banking scam" that resulted in her withdrawing over $200,000 from her savings.

Per the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3), it's concerning to see the frequency of tech support scams targeting vulnerable groups. As families worry about their loved ones falling victim to such scams, San Diego's Elder Justice Task Force is a vital asset in the fight against this type of elder abuse.

The Elder Justice Task Force, comprised of various agencies including the District Attorney's Office and the FBI, brings together a range of resources to tackle financial scams head-on. They have identified 1,800 victims in San Diego County, albeit the actual number of victims is believed to fall significantly higher, as many victims tend to not come forward due to fear or embarrassment. Last year saw losses amounting to $49 million, while 2023 has already driven past $75 million in losses.

The relentless surge in tech support and banking scams is a constant obstacle for investigators who are striving to protect senior citizens from criminal syndicates and international theft rings. However, the commitment these investigators display is a silver lining to victims and their families, assuring them that help and support are available.

In tackling the threat to elder residents who are being targeted by tech support scams, a cohesive effort is needed. The Elder Justice Task Force urges the public to remain vigilant and educate their loved ones about the red flags indicative of scams. Encouraging open conversation in affected communities serves as a direct countermeasure to criminal networks.
