A local man, Steven Walker, 36, has been arrested after an intense five-hour standoff with the Sheriff's Special Enforcement Detail (SWAT), according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department. The standoff took place in East County, presenting a significant threat to local safety. Details from the San Diego Sheriff's Department reveal that the suspect had reportedly carried out an assault on his wife, prompting the call to law enforcement.
An initial call to the Rancho San Diego Sheriff's Station on Sunday, October 8, reported an assault incident at Walker's residence, a Madrid Way apartment complex, located in the 10200 block of Spring Valley.
Authorities found the assaulted woman whom swiftly, they transported to the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. She claimed her husband was armed with a couple of handguns and a rifle, adding a dangerous element to the situation.
Authorities attempted to approach Walker, however, he retreated in the safety of his apartment and deliberately refusing to respond to multiple phone calls and announcements made by deputies, seeking his peaceful exit. This obstinacy led the authorities to call the Sheriff's Crisis Negotiations Team and the Sheriff's Unmanned Aircraft Systems Unit for assistance. In the meanwhile, the Rancho San Diego Sherrif's Station investigators didn't waste any time and procure a search warrant.
At around 10:30 p.m., Walker finally emerged from his apartment and surrendered peacefully to the deputies. The charges held against him include assault with great bodily injury and domestic battery.
The investigation is ongoing.
