The circumstances surrounding the death of Maurice Monk, a mentally ill man who died in Santa Rita County Jail last year, have sparked renewed concern over the treatment of mentally ill individuals in the justice system. Yesterday, Alameda County District Attorney Pamela Price revealed that the Sheriff's Office had agreed to disclose information related to Monk's death, thus aiding in furthering the investigation.
Monk was taken into custody on October 11, 2021, for disorderly conduct and refusal to exit an AC Transit Bus. Later, he was discovered unresponsive in his cell, having possibly been deceased for up to 72 hours. Consequently, Monk's family filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Alameda County and Wellpath, its medical provider. A settlement was reached with the family for approximately $7 million.
In a press conference held yesterday, District Attorney Price made a profound statement, “Mr. Monk, I am told, had a mental illness – a diagnosis. He had medical issues. We all know that mental illness is not a crime, and it should not be a death sentence in Alameda County,”
