On Monday, Ken Paxton, the Attorney General, disclosed that the Office of the Attorney General (OAG) of Texas was initiating an investigation into possible fraudulent actions by Media Matters. These steps ensued due to accusations alleging manipulation of data by the organization on social media platform X.com, previously known as Twitter.

To thoroughly carry out the investigation, the OAG invokes both the Texas Business Organizations Code and the Deceptive Trade Practices Act, signaling its resolve in enforcing penalties for fraudulent actions committed by Texas-based nonprofits.

Attorney General Paxton released a statement in which he pointedly referred to Media Matters as a radical anti-free speech organization. He further underscored, without mincing words, “We are examining the issue closely to ensure that the public has not been deceived by the schemes of radical left-wing organizations who would like nothing more than to limit freedom by reducing participation in the public square.”

Texas has had prior dealings with questionable nonprofit groups. This year saw the Texas Tribune in a controversy, returning support from a leading gun manufacturer after a mass shooting incident within the state. The Tribune's decision, as reported earlier, highlighted intricacies for nonprofit funding sources and public opinion influence on organizational operations.
