A new fast-casual Cantonese restaurant has settled into a Northwest Austin strip mall, bringing Hong Kong-style roast meats and Chaoshan braised specialties to a stretch of RM 620 already known for its regional Chinese dining. Precious Chinese BBQ opened May 27 at 11815 RM 620 N., Ste. 4, in the Cedar Park-North Austin area, serving duck and pork seasoned with spices and roasted to order.
The restaurant is built around siu mei, the Hong Kong barbecue tradition of roasting meats like duck and pork, according to Community Impact. Alongside the roasted offerings, the menu includes traditional Chaoshan braised specialties such as braised duck and pork trotters, prepared using a signature braising technique that glazes and slow-simmers meats in an aromatic brine. That brine is made with brown sugar, salt, soybean paste and more than a dozen spices, including star anise and galangal, per the same report.
The restaurant's own website describes its roasting process as done “meticulously,” and Community Impact's report characterizes the resulting meats as tender and flavorful. Local diner reviews from July indicate most main dishes run between $10 and $13, positioning Precious Chinese BBQ as fast-casual Hong Kong barbecue rather than full-service banquet dining, according to a post from The Honest Foodist on Facebook.
Why RM 620 Keeps Attracting Regional Chinese Kitchens
Precious Chinese BBQ's arrival adds to a growing cluster of specialized Chinese dining concepts along the RM 620 corridor. Hoodline reported in April that Spicy House brought Sichuan heat to the same stretch of Northwest Austin at 11630 N. RM 620, and Cantonese dim sum fixture New Fortune previously signaled plans for a comeback location, New Fortune 2, at 12300 FM 620 near Anderson Mill Road. Commercial listings along the corridor cite traffic counts of roughly 45,000 vehicles a day near intersections like RM 620 and Anderson Mill Road, a visibility factor that has made the strip attractive to restaurant operators.
The demographic backdrop helps explain the momentum. Asian residents make up an estimated 16.7% to 19% of Cedar Park's population of roughly 79,000, one of the suburb's largest demographic groups. Central Texas's overall Asian population grew 96.8% during the 2010-2020 decade, with much of that suburban growth concentrated in Williamson County communities including Cedar Park and Round Rock, according to the Austin Chamber of Commerce.
An Affluent Suburb Draws Chef-Driven Concepts
Cedar Park ranks among Williamson County's most affluent suburbs, with a median household income estimated at $129,545 and more than half of households earning over $100,000 annually, per Cubit Planning figures. That purchasing power has coincided with higher-profile Asian dining investments in the area. Hoodline reported in March that Michelin-noted chef Ling Qi Wu is preparing to open Holly Wu Asian Restaurant on Ronald W. Reagan Boulevard in Cedar Park this fall, part of a broader wave of established operators pushing into the suburb.
Behind the counter, keeping siu mei authentic within Texas health rules requires careful technique. Traditional Cantonese siu mei calls for roasting meats at high temperatures exceeding 200 degrees Celsius, or 392 degrees Fahrenheit, to achieve crisp skin while keeping the meat safe to eat, according to guidance from Hong Kong's Centre for Food Safety. Once cooked, commercial kitchens serving roast duck and pork must maintain hot-holding temperatures at or above 135 degrees Fahrenheit under Texas Food Establishment Rules enforced by Austin Public Health.
Precious Chinese BBQ's menu, including its braised duck and pork trotters, is listed on the restaurant's website at www.preciousaustin.com. Community Impact's report frames the opening as part of southern Chinese culinary traditions arriving in a local restaurant scene that has, until recently, leaned more heavily on general American-Chinese takeout along the same corridor.
