Austin is facing challenges with self-driving vehicles, and in response, the city has launched a dashboard to track incidents involving these autonomous cars. The initiative comes as public complaints mount, highlighting the need for better oversight of this technology.
The dashboard, according to LMTonline, provides updates on issues such as traffic disruptions, disregarding police signals, and other problems on the road. In the past year, self-driving vehicles have been involved in several near-misses and have frustrated both law enforcement and pedestrians.
Since July, there have been over 40 complaints about driverless cars. Issues include traffic blockages, near misses, and actual collisions KXAN reports. Cruise, one of the companies testing their technology in Austin, has been at the center of these incidents.
Law enforcement professionals have expressed skepticism. "They don’t know how to follow our signals or commands, just the traffic lights or stop signs," one officer reported to KXAN. The self-driving cars frequently malfunction near the University of Texas campus, particularly during events at the Moody Center. Additionally, other emergency services have reported problematic encounters with these vehicles.
Incidents predominantly involve Cruise, with one report from the Austin Fire Department describing a driverless car nearly causing two accidents with an ambulance in one instance. Downtown and West Campus are the most common areas for such events as reported by KXAN.
These self-driving vehicles were recently involved in an accident where one hit a parked car before leaving the scene, another blemish on their record. But Cruise has pledged to make improvements, focusing on better emergency vehicle detection and response capabilities.
