Austin is waking Sunday to clear skies and temperatures in the low 80s, but the relief will be brief: The high is expected to reach 106 degrees by late afternoon. An Extreme Heat Warning covers Travis County through 7 p.m. Sunday, with dangerous heat continuing into the workweek.
Warning Gives Way To Several More Days Of Heat
The National Weather Service Austin/San Antonio office forecasts highs near 105 degrees Monday, 104 Tuesday and 105 Wednesday. Heat-index values could reach 108 Monday, while the broader warning area may see readings that feel closer to 110 degrees Sunday afternoon.
Mostly Dry With One Small Chance For Storms
Rain is not expected to provide much relief through Wednesday, with little to no chance of precipitation and light south or southwest winds generally around 5 mph. A slight chance of showers and thunderstorms arrives Thursday afternoon and evening at 20%, but Friday and Saturday are expected to stay mostly sunny, with highs near 102 and 101.
Plan Around The Hottest Hours
Outdoor work, exercise and errands will be safest early or late in the day, with frequent breaks in shade or air conditioning and plenty of water. The City of Austin says public libraries and Parks facilities can serve as cooling centers during normal operating hours, while the Austin Resource Center for the Homeless at 500 East 7th St. is available as a daytime cooling center from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Residents should check on older neighbors and anyone without reliable air conditioning, and avoid leaving children or pets in parked vehicles. Anyone showing signs of heat exhaustion should be moved to a cool place; heat stroke is an emergency, and residents should call 911.
