Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has tapped Matt Hale as the new Deputy Mayor of Finance, Operations, and Innovation. Taking over for the retiring Jeanne Holm, Hale is poised to bring over a decade of savvy financial finesse from within the city's political corridors to his new high-profile gig.
Mayor Bass announced the promotion, putting Hale in charge of core city services including hiring, technology, and facility management, not to mention the city’s purse strings. With Holm stepping down after a notable stint aimed at elevating the city's data accessibility and technological capabilities, Hale is being handed the baton amidst expectations he’ll sprint from the word go.
Hale comes to the position with a thick portfolio of experience, the last year of which he spent honing his skills as the Director of Legislative and Intergovernmental Affairs for the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power. But it’s his tour as Deputy Chief of Staff for Councilmember Paul Krekorian and a stint as a Legislative Consultant in the California State Assembly that's given him the insider’s edge on the City Council’s Budget and Finance Committee, a position he held from 2012 to 2022. A standout alumnus of California State University, Sacramento, where he majored in government, Hale is now ready to take on the financial reins and steer LA through its next chapter.
The outgoing Dr. Holm served for seven years and had a huge impact, especially in navigating the city through the digital demands of the pandemic. Leaving behind a legacy that includes enhancing everyday Angelenos' access to essential broadband internet. Now taking the mantle, Matt Hale with his Sylmar residency still intact, looks to continue the trajectory, building on the foundations laid by Dr. Holm to push Los Angeles toward a brighter, more innovative future.
