On Tuesday afternoon, a 44-year-old man's alleged theft spree came to a screeching halt on a California freeway, thanks to some sharp eyes and high-speed police action. Jesse Otero thought he could outpace the law after snatching goodies from a Bay Area store, but Concord's finest had other plans.
Caught in the holiday hubbub, Otero attempted to vanish into the crowd after lifting merchandise, but little did he know, an extra set of cops were out patrolling "the area of the Veranda" looking for guys just like him. Concord Police Department's Facebook page detailed the wild sequence that unfolded when one of their swing shift patrol officers was alerted to Otero's alleged deed. And the chase was on—streaking down Willow Pass Road and shooting into the Sun Valley Mall parking lot.
A CPD motor officer tried to put an end to the shenanigans, but Otero darted onto I-680, seemingly desperate to evade capture. The situation escalated, and soon the California Highway Patrol was roped in, blocking traffic in a dramatic bid that allowed Concord officers to safely detain the male on the move. According to the Concord Police Department, traffic was "momentarily blocked to allow our officers to enter the freeway and safely detain the male."
Overture to escape or not, Jesse Otero is now rubbing elbows with the walls of the Concord PD jail. He’s been shipped off to the Martinez Detention Facility, facing charges of theft and resisting or delaying a peace officer. It's curtains for his liberty, at least until the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office takes a gander at his file for filing considerations. Kudos poured in from a grateful public, with police tipping their hats to the California Highway Patrol and the Pleasant Hill Police Department for their assistance in reeling in the holiday scrooge.
