A security guard employed by L&P Global Security was dismissed from Story Elementary School in Allen, Texas, after negligently leaving his gun in an adult restroom. The incident was reported by The Dallas Morning News This event underscores the balance between ensuring safety and maintaining security in schools.
The guard had allegedly intended to prevent his firearm from hitting the floor whilst in the restroom, resulting in the removal of the weapon from its holster, which constitutes a policy breach. The guard was fired by L&P Global Security in response. The security company is to bolster protocols and intensify personnel training, as endorsed by a WFAA report.
The Dallas Morning News also reported that Allen ISD employed the security firm in order to abide by a recent state law that necessitates the presence of armed personnel on public school premises. The law, despite intending to increase school safety, can be rendered ineffective by human errors and negligence, prompting questions about the law's effectiveness.
In situations where firearms and children co-exist, it is of great importance for security companies, school districts, and communities to assess the pros and cons of armed security within schools. While the security guard's actions were misguided, they could have led to unthinkable outcomes. Charles Hollis, operations director at L&P Global Security, stated that despite the guard's good intent, he had to be released due to policy violation, according to a WFAA report.
