Jordan Owens, a capital murder suspect, allegedly fired 20 rounds at police using a converter device. An attempted arrest of Owens by the U.S. Marshal task force, connected to the shooting of Chiquavion Ross, led to Owens responding with gunfire using a Glock switch. This illegal converter device transforms pistols into machine guns. Dallas Police Department-released body camera footage shows officers firing back and subsequently retreating when one officer realized he had been hit per the Dallas Morning News.
The violent encounter, which led to injuries to Dallas police Senior Cpl. Edgar Morales and Owens, raised concerns about the hazards of policing. Chief Eddie García reiterated the need for appreciation post-incident, stating, "It’s a great opportunity for us to take a step back and be grateful that we did not lose an officer, be grateful that those officers did an amazing job and stayed in the fight", according to the Dallas Morning News.
On the other hand, the incident brought to light ongoing law enforcement challenges, including hazardous gear such as the Glock switch used by Owens. Chief García labeled this device as one of law enforcement's largest obstacles. Owens' use of the Glock switch signifies the urgency of tightening control over the possession and usage of such devices, although it alone cannot be blamed for his dangerous behavior. Echoing Chief García's sentiment, "For them to stand there in the face of evil like that, I’m proud of them for what they did", as quoted in the Dallas Morning News.
