Over the weekend, two fatal incidents involving Capital Metro (CapMetro) trains were reported in central Texas, necessitating a review of local public transportation safety measures. On Saturday, a woman lost her life after a CapMetro train struck her in Leander, KXAN reports. This was followed by a similar incident on Friday, where a pedestrian was fatally struck by a CapMetro train near Central Austin's Hancock Center, as detailed by CBS Austin.
The Leander incident happened near US Highway 183, between Sonny Drive and Farm-to-Market Road 2243. The victim was crossing the railroad bridge when the train hit her, leading to a heavy traffic impact as police began their investigation. With just the engineer and conductor onboard at that time, authorities are working to identify the deceased woman, KXAN said in their report.
Reacting to the incident, CapMetro implemented rail delays and temporarily substituted a bus bridge for the rail service between the Lakeline and Leander stations, while investigations by Leander police were ongoing. This highlights the urgency of focusing attentions to improve train safety in the region.
The second accident took place near the intersection of I-35 Southbound and Clarkson Avenue, Central Austin, causing rail service delays for several hours, according to CBS Austin. CapMetro, in a statement, recognized the fatal incident and offered their condolences, with further details still pending for release.
These accidents, deemed tragic, emphasize the need to assess CapMetro's safety precautions and infrastructural upgrades. Meanwhile, it's pertinent that the community rallies round the bereaved families while seeking out solutions to avert similar incidents in the future.
