Mountain View's Hobee's to Close After 49 Years, Shifts Focus to New San Jose LocationSource: Google Street View

The Mountain View location of Hobee's, notable for its acclaimed breakfast offerings, will close by the end of Thanksgiving weekend after 49 years in operation, as revealed in a recent Facebook post by the restaurant. The decision is tied to the Hobee's brand focusing on a new San Jose location, carrying forward its tradition of valued hospitality.

Co-owners Camille and Daniel Chijate have voiced their conflicting feelings about the decision. They cited the slow recovery of sales post-pandemic and the costly upgrades needed at the aging Mountain View establishment as reasons for the shutdown in an interview with the Mercury News. Camille Chijate commented, “Hobee’s Mountain View, for all its cozy charm, is outdated and in need of costly repairs.

Hobee's Mountain View, originally launched by the Taber family in 1974, has been a fixture in the local community. As stated by Chijate in the Mercury News article, the restaurant was awarded the "Best Breakfast" honor by The Mountain View Voice readership over four decades on more than one occasion. Patrons can still frequent Hobee's branches in Belmont, Palo Alto, and Sunnyvale, as well as the soon-to-open San Jose location.

In celebration of the closing of the Mountain View branch, the restaurant is hosting special events on Thanksgiving weekend, featuring nostalgic menu items, opportunities to interact with employees, and spinning the "famous prize wheel." The restaurant will serve breakfast from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily until closure. Chijate has also confirmed via Mercury News that staff at the Mountain View location will be given the opportunity to work at other Hobee's venues.

Parallel to maintaining the existing Hobee's locations, owners Camille and Daniel Chijate are preparing to open their new restaurant in the historic Germania Hall in San Jose. This new dining spot and beer garden is set to launch soon, offering a new lease of life to the North Second Street landmark.
