The Escondido Police Department has scheduled a DUI checkpoint for November 18, operating from 5 p.m. to 1 a.m. The exact location is undisclosed, per the Escondido Police Department's announcement today. These checkpoints' locations are established based on past records of impaired driving accidents in an attempt to remove problematic drivers from the streets.
Escondido's Police Chief, Ed Varso, highlighted the risk that impaired drivers pose and stressed preventive steps for road safety. Escondido publicly states that impairment can result from diverse sources, such as prescription or over-the-counter medications and marijuana, aside from alcohol, despite their legal status in California.
First-time DUI offenders, if apprehended, could potentially face around $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a risk of license suspension. This program is funded through a grant awarded by the California Office of Traffic Safety, sourced from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
