Tochukwu Abel Edeh, 33, hailing from Nigeria and most recently residing in Jacksonville, Florida, has been sentenced to 42 months in prison and faces a substantial financial penalty for his fraudulent financial activities. The Department of Justice revealed that a sum exceeding $2.5 million in restitution, along with an additional $810,966 in forfeiture, has been reported.

Edeh, who pleaded guilty this September to charges including money laundering conspiracy. Using his network of currency exchange and car shops in Texas, Florida, and Nigeria, the con artist cunningly offered his victims what they thought was a golden ticket to Bitcoin riches, only to find their investments lining the pockets of Edeh and his cronies. Running afoul of federal law, neither Edeh nor his posse had money transmitting licenses to their name.

According to U.S. District Court Judge Richard G. Stearns, who handed down the sentence, this conspiracy involved Ponzi-style schemes that began circling as early as 2015, drawing in victims with promises of legitimate trading services, the Justice Department outlines.

His accomplice, Charles Ochi, is already behind bars for five years. While three others saw the courtroom gavel fall their way, shelling out probation time for their misdeeds, one Vanessa Okocha, almost as elusive as the legitimacy of their business, remains on the lam.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Kriss Basil at the Securities, Financial & Cyber Fraud Unit lead the charge.
