Harvard University, the hallowed hub of higher education, has found itself in the crosshairs of the Department of Education's Civil Rights unit, which is digging into allegations of antisemitism on its Cambridge campus. According to a report from Boston 25 News, the Ivy League institution stands accused of failing to take prompt and adequate steps to quell harassment against Jewish and Israeli students, post events of violence in the Middle East on October 7.
Harvard's response to these claims was tepid but cooperative. "We support the work of the Office of Civil Rights to ensure students' rights to access educational programs are safeguarded.", a university spokesperson stated in a message obtained by WCVB. Harvard, no stranger to demonstrations, has seen its grounds churn with pro-Israel and pro-Palestinian protests after the deadly skirmishes involving Hamas and Israeli forces last month.
Wellesley College, another Massachusetts institution of higher learning, faced complaints from two Jewish organizations in early November. Assistant Secretary of Education for Civil Rights Catherine E. Lhamon lamented, "We at the Department of Education, like the nation, see the fear students and school communities experience as hate proliferates in schools," as reported by Boston 25 News.
