The Los Angeles County Department of Consumer and Business Affairs (DCBA) has launched the LA County Rent Relief Program, a scheme offering over $46 million to assist landlords during the ongoing pandemic. The plan aims to offer direct financial help to landlords impacted by the financial strains of COVID-19 as mentioned in a media release.
The Rent Relief Program targets small-scale rental property owners, traditionally defined as "mom-and-pop" landlords, burdened with tenant rent debts. According to DCBA Director Rafael Carbajal, the scheme's agenda is to quickly to decrease tenant evictions and sustain the rental market, amidst a focus on overall housing continuity in LA County.
In partnership with The Center by Lendistry, the program is set to give up to $30,000 per unit to qualified landlords, covering expenses incurred since April 1, 2022. Aimed at landlords owning up to four rental units, this program provides critical financial support to those who may otherwise face severe economic consequences. The Center by Lendistry's President & CEO, Tunua Thrash-Ntuk, underlines the importance of this, stating that "mom-and-pop landlords are the backbone of our local housing market."
Applications for the LA County Rent Relief Program will open in mid-December. Landlords interested in applying are encouraged to review the process online at www.lacountyrentrelief.com. The site provides updates about the application process and links to additional resources for landlords and tenants.
Funds will be distributed to landlords throughout various regions of Los Angeles County, excluding the City of Los Angeles itself. Priority for fund disbursement will be given to properties situated in high-need areas as defined by the LA County Equity Explorer Tool, and to landlords with incomes at or below 80% of the LA County Area Median Income (AMI).
