The I-10 freeway closure's aftermath has driven LA Mayor and Metro Board Chair Karen Bass to introduce a motion aimed at enhancing ridership, extending service, and refining regional coordination within the metro system. A press release from the Mayor's Office elaborates on this 15-point motion aiming to alleviate the challenges faced by commuters due to this closure by providing robust support for public transit users.
"The shutting down of a segment of the I-10 Freeway impacts not only the City of Los Angeles but the entire region," Mayor Bass highlights, corroborating the incident's regional magnitude. Metro recently disclosed a 10% rise in E-Line ridership since the freeway closure. This could potentially hint at the potential that promoting public transportation holds. The motion outlined in the press release proposes measures such as acceleration of buses and trains in the affected zone, provision of unrestricted transit for LIFE Program riders, and an increment in Transit Ambassador presence on the system.
Given the urgent nature of the situation and several measures proposed by Mayor Bass, quick relief may be provided for Angelenos plagued by the I-10 freeway closure. The Mayor's Office has also made public free rides on LADOT CommuterExpress and DASH buses. They also proposed traffic alterations like an extra turn lane in every direction on the Alameda corridor and the placement of trained traffic officers in the area.
Metro Board Director and LA County Supervisor Hilda L. Solis, who represents Downtown LA, Boyle Heights, East LA, and the San Gabriel Valley, perceives, "a silver lining in this ordeal has been our revitalized appreciation and wish to market the impressive public transit options Metro offers."
The motion also has the significant support of key regional leaders such as Metro Board Director and Supervisor Holly J. Mitchell, Supervisor Janice Hahn, and Whittier Mayor Pro Tem Fernando Dutra. Dutra remarked, "the I-10 is a crucial highway in the nerve center of Los Angeles. When the I-10 suffers, all of L.A. suffers." This motion then becomes an answer to the immediate issues caused by the I-10 closure and furthers the need to facilitate sustainable transport for LA residents.
