The Houston Police Department has released a video detailing a game-changing shift in the state's license plate policy. Starting July 1, 2025, Texas drivers will be required to permanently ditch temporary paper license plates for sturdy metal ones upon purchasing vehicles, as per new legislation.
"Soon, temporary and paper tags will be a part of the past," Sgt. Tracy Hicks said in the informational video obtained by FOX 26 Houston.
Fake paper license plates have been linked to various crimes, including robberies and murders. In Harris County, connected crimes have spiked by over 300% from 2016 to 2021. "I’d say more than half don’t belong on that vehicle. They’re fake, absolutely," 1st Vice President of the Houston Police Officers’ Union Ken Nealy disclosed to FOX 26 Houston.
The push for change gained momentum following the tragic killing of Paul Castro’s 17-year-old son, David, by a driver using fake paper license plates. Castro was driving his son home from an Astros game when their lives were irreversibly altered. "Every day is a different flavor of difficulty," Castro shared with FOX 26 Houston, "We’re hoping that with this [new law], a lot of people who are finding an easy way to do illicit things won't have that easy pathway," he added.
According to new guidelines, dealerships will issue metal license plates in place of paper tags. An official post from the Houston Police X account minced no words: "Attention, drivers! Texas is going paperless," Just add a nominal $10 fee for the metal plate on the spot.
