With Massachusetts' emergency shelters operating at maximum capacity, the Commonwealth is teaming up with federal authorities to establish a work authorization clinic for migrants. This initiative is designed to expedite the procedure for qualifying migrants to get work authorization, facilitating their move from the shelter system to more secure living situations according to NBC Boston, WWLP.

Since obtaining work authorization typically takes three to four months for migrants, this clinic was established to hasten the process as per NBC Boston. These clinics will provide services for a week, starting today, November 13, and then again on the week of November 27. The specific venue in Middlesex County hasn't been announced, but eligible migrants will be transported from their shelters to attend the clinic as released by WWLP.

According to Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey, the state will provide appointments and transportation to the clinic, aiming to help more families move out of state shelters. This is part of a broader initiative due to the state of emergency that the governor declared in August regarding the emergency assistance shelter system, which was nearing its 7,500-family limit according to the same press WWLP. To quickly process work authorizations and assist with the financial strain of sheltering a significant influx of asylum seekers, the governor has since reached out to the Biden administration.

Collaborating with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the clinic will assist in accumulating and processing work authorizations for migrants. Its aim is to also help families find more stable housing options. "This clinic will be critically to building on the work that our administration has already led to connect more migrants with work opportunities, which will enable them to support their families and move out of emergency shelters into more stable housing options," stated Healey as mentioned in WWLP.

Reportedly, the Healey administration's previous efforts have successfully linked migrants with job opportunities at employers such as Dunkin' Donuts, Market Basket, and Walmart. The establishment of the work authorization clinic signifies a significant step in addressing the issues faced by migrants and the pressure on the state's shelter system.
