In the early morning hours of Monday, the Piedmont Police Department's Automated License Plate Recognition (ALPR) cameras successfully detected a vehicle with a stolen license plate. The incident was reported in a detailed Facebook post by the Piedmont PD.
Following the alert, officers swiftly apprehended two female suspects who were in possession of stolen Amazon packages, credit cards, IDs, and mail. The Piedmont Police emphasized the need for increased awareness of property crimes, especially with the approaching holiday shopping season. Both suspects, already known to law enforcement for previous similar offenses, were apprehended thanks to the exemplary diligence of the night shift team.
The arrested driver was taken into custody and placed behind bars at Santa Rita Jail. The Piedmont Police Department commended their night shift team for their outstanding work and used the opportunity to advise the community to be vigilant, particularly with the surge in package deliveries expected in the coming weeks.
To address the threat of package theft, the Piedmont PD recommended several preventative measures. They encouraged residents to have packages delivered to locations where they could be received by a person, such as a neighbor's house or workplace. Alternatively, they suggested arranging for packages to be delivered at a specific time and place where the recipient could be present. The police also recommended subscribing to delivery alerts, providing instructions to shippers to conceal packages, and avoiding leaving packages in vehicles to prevent opportunistic theft.
With the holiday shopping season in full swing, the Piedmont Police Department's advice remains practical. They urged residents to utilize secure delivery sites like Amazon, FedEx, or UPS locations, install security cameras with visible signage, and emphasize the importance of not leaving packages unattended in vehicles, as thieves can strike quickly.
