On November 5, Redwood City Police Department officers responded to a call concerning a man allegedly in possession of a rifle at the Redwood Mobile Estates. De-escalation and measured action took center stage during the operation.

A press release from the Redwood City Police Department disclosed that the initial sighting of a Hispanic adult male atop a trailer with a presumed rifle triggered the incident. Initial reports alluded to possible shots being fired. As police arrived on the scene, the man relocated into a trailer housing his wife and young son.

Upon arrival, the Crisis Negotiations Unit (CNU) endeavored to negotiate with the man. Collaborating agencies provided necessary information via drones, delivering a comprehensive overview of the situation. The CNU communicated with the man, urging him to come out of the residence without any confrontation after learning about his violent criminal history.

A tense set of negotiations ensued during which the individual, visibly distressed, temporarily exited the trailer. Officers at the scene recognized the escalating risk, not only to the individual but also to his wife, child, and nearby residents. The potential for him to re-enter the home and use his weapon elevated tension levels.

Officers strategically used a non-lethal 40MM device to reduce tensions. The targeted intervention led to the subject's receiver being detained without any further occurrences to minimal injuries. The subject subsequently underwent treatment for minor injuries at the San Mateo County General Hospital. He was also subject to a comprehensive mental health assessment, per the Redwood City Police Department.

Upon further inspection, it was ascertained that the reported rifle was indeed a realistic-looking pellet gun. Criminal charges against the man are currently pending.
