The San Jose Police Department, still active on the scene, confirmed that the latest incident, which marks the city's 44th fatal collision of the year, occurred in the area of Capitol Expressway and Bluefield Drive. A white Range Rover, with an adult female and two children inside, collided with a man crossing the street, as per the SJPD's official release.
The investigation reveals that at 12:34 AM, the vehicle, described as a 2016 white Range Rover SUV, plowed through the marked crosswalk, striking the adult male pedestrian. The victim—whose identity remains withheld pending family notification by the Santa Clara County Coroner's Office—was rushed to a local hospital but could not be saved, succumbing to his injuries and adding to the troublesome toll of 46 traffic-related deaths this year, with pedestrians accounting for a disheartening 25 of those. In a disturbing twist, the driver who initially fled the scene was later apprehended at her residence and is now facing a slew of charges, including felony hit-and-run, according to the San Jose Police Department’s recount of the ordeal.
The woman, whose hasty decision to desert the scene with her two juvenile passengers now faces serious legal repercussions, was taken into custody without incident and currently resides at the Santa Clara County Main Jail, staring down accusations of vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and child endangerment.
Detective Aldinger, leading the SJPD's Traffic Investigations Unit, is urging anyone with information about a recent fatal incident to step forward. The hope is that shared evidence could shed light on the circumstances surrounding another tragic loss this year.
