Cpl. Claudia Cormier of the San Marcos Police Department has been lauded for her impressive career milestones and her significant recovery from a life-altering injury. The IACP honored Cormier for her dedication to service and her community. Her career at SMPD spans 16 years, garnering acclaim in the wake of her return to duty after a significant injury.
In 2019, Cormier was catastrophically injured while on duty when she was hit by a driver on the interstate. The incident, to her leg being lost, led to a hospital stay of three months and over 20 surgeries.
Cormier's response to her predicament was to passionately undertake the development of a mental wellness program for law enforcement. As part of her Master of Public Administration degree, Cormier applied her experience to her research project, aiming at improving the return-to-duty program in an agency within the Central Texas corridor and working to include civilian staff.
Master of Public Administration program allowing, she began promoting systemic change across departments by applying the insights gained from her recovery. Subsequently she was awarded the Systems Thinking Award at the 2023 Graduate Student Research Conference. The Texas State University Political Science Department reports that Cormier's own experience influenced her to create a program that could offer, a gradual return to work, emotional support, physical training, and mental wellness resources.
