A tragic incident unfolded on a highway in southeast Bexar County, where a 70-year-old man lost his life while trying to cross the road. According to the San Antonio Police Department (SAPD), the accident occurred around 9 p.m. on Friday, near a convenience store on Highway 181. The pedestrian, who was not identified, was struck by an eastbound vehicle, with the incident being reported by KSAT.

Investigating officers stated that the driver, traveling in the dark, could not see the man due to his dark clothing and unsuccessfully tried to swerve to avoid the collision. After the accident, the driver stopped and, while waiting for help to arrive, attempted to render aid to the man. Still, despite their efforts and those of emergency responders, he was declared dead at the scene by medical examiners, as Express News reported.

In the wake of the incident, SAPD evaluated the driver for potential impairment but found no evidence of intoxication or impairment, leading to the decision that the driver would not face criminal charges. The driver's immediate action to stop and attempt to provide assistance to the victim was noted in the reports from both agencies.

It was also highlighted by police that the victim was not crossing the highway using a designated crosswalk or crossing area. "She did not see the 70-year-old until the 'last moment,'" the driver explained, as she tried swerving to avoid the man, according to the preliminary report, but her efforts were unfortunately met with failure. The incident culminated with the driver calling 911 and the man being pronounced dead just 12 minutes after the collision, reported at 9:12 p.m. by the Medical Examiner.
