The six-month-long manhunt for an alleged murderer has come to a dramatic close as U.S. Border Patrol agents nabbed Everardo Lopez-Vega, the suspect in a brutal homicide that shocked the Apple Valley community earlier this year. Lopez-Vega, a 29-year-old Hesperia resident, stands accused of the June killing of 30-year-old Omar Lopez-Barraza, whose life was cruelly cut short in an assault that began in the quiet suburb and ended in the desolate stretches of the California desert.
Authorities report that the tragedy unfolded on June 25, when deputies from the Victor Valley Sheriff's Station were dispatched to an assault with a deadly weapon incident on the 21600 block of Roundup Way. It was here that the victim, now identified as Lopez-Barraza, was allegedly shot, robbed, and subsequently abandoned in an unspecified desert area by the suspect. Later that day, an off-road enthusiast made the grisly discovery of the victim's corpse near Old Woman Springs Road in Landers, prompting a full-blown homicide investigation by the Sheriff's Specialized Investigations Division.
On December 4, the hunt for Lopez-Vega reached its conclusion as border patrol agents detained him in Arizona, according to a public release by the San Bernardino County Sheriff-Coroner Department. With extradition to San Bernardino County pending, Lopez-Vega is slated to face murder charges for his alleged involvement in the devastating crime that has left the tight-knit community of Apple Valley reeling.
