The Anoka County Parks Department has snagged a County Achievement Award from the Association of Minnesota Counties (AMC) for its innovative AR trail app called “Tracks.” Used at Bunker Hills Regional Park, this nifty piece of tech brings the park's wildlife and history to virtual life, connecting the digital generation with nature in a way that’s both educational and entertaining. “The app is one of the first AR trail initiatives in Minnesota, and the creativity our Parks Department has shown in developing this learning resource for the public is impressive,” Commissioner Mike Gamache, chair of the county’s Parks Committee, lauded the effort, according to Anoka County recent press release.

The "Tracks" app, hailed for its innovation and approach, comes with translation services to cater to a diverse population, addressing the disconnect generally seen between youth and the great outdoors. More than 500 downloads so far reflect its growing popularity among park-goers. While the app was being selected at the Minnesota Recreation and Park Association annual conference for a learning session, the county basked in the honor of the recognition.

Fusing the natural environment with augmented reality, “Tracks” offers park visitors a new way to engage with the park’s fauna, history, and habitats. “This app allows guests to experience park wildlife, history, and habitats that come to life right before your eyes,” Parks Communications Supervisor Nicole Greenwell illustrated the experience in a statement obtained by the Anoka County press release.

The AMC has been spotlighting county government strides since 1977, with the County Achievement Awards recognizing the most valuable innovations and improvements. Presented at AMC's Annual Conference from Dec. 4-6, the Awards serve to highlight and encourage advancements that benefit Minnesotans across the state. The AMC, a voluntary state-wide organization, is at the helm of assisting the 87 counties in Minnesota to deliver effective governance.
