A massive fire tore through an under-construction apartment building in Rowlett's Sapphire Bay development this past weekend, drawing a multi-agency firefighting effort and now federal investigators from the ATF. The fire, which began Friday night around 8:30 p.m., engulfed the five-story structure, known as The View apartments, which was slated to welcome residents next month. The blaze was battled for over a day by crews from several neighboring cities and was finally subdued early Sunday morning, according to NBC DFW.
Despite the building's close brush with completion, it was fortunate to still be vacant, sparing potential residents from what surely would have been a catastrophic event. The fire's aftermath prompted the ATF to step in, bringing in state-of-the-art equipment and expertise to assess the wreckage and determine the fire's origin. The involvement of such federal resources underscores the fire's intensity and the complexity of the ongoing investigation. "This type of response and assistance is normal for a fire of this size," said a spokesperson for Rowlett Fire, as quoted by NBC DFW.
Nearby resident Miena Joseph and others were forced to leave their homes due to the dense smoke and the potential for embers to spread. While the hefty 1 billion dollar price tag of the Sapphire Bay project looms over the destruction, thankfully no injuries were reported from the incident. Rowlett Mayor Blake Margolis expressed both relief that an evacuation of residents was not necessary and regret over the damage to the promising development, as reported by Hoodline.
With the smoke now cleared, the focus has shifted to pinpointing the cause. Rowlett Fire Marshal Thomas Cooper and Sapphire Bay President Marc English are among the officials spearheading the effort. "The cause of the structural fire is unknown at this time," English wrote in a statement, which highlights the current uncertainty but also the determination to uncover answers, per Hoodline.
