In the city of Austin, six lives were claimed, left others wounded, and ended with suspect Shane James Jr. behind bars facing a slew of heavy charges. Following the deadly events that unfolded on December 5, Austin Police have now revealed bodycam footage shedding light on the grim aftermath of a shooting in which a mother and her daughter were the latest victims.
Recent footage released by the Austin Police Department, obtained by KSAT, captures the tense moments as officers respond to the 5300 block of Austral Loop. Tragically discovered at the home were Catherine Short, 56, and her daughter Lauren Short, 30, both fatally shot. Even while carefully approaching the scene, APD's Detective Joseph Strother was shot multiple times, although not critically, by James who subsequently fled in a stolen vehicle from the victims' home. Officer Khristof Oborski's bodycam further documents the chaos with gunshots audible as backup arrives.
Suspect Shane James Jr.'s arrest came after a daylong rampage involving separate incidents in both Austin and NE Bexar County, leaving a trail of victims, including his parents as reported by KSAT. James, already on the radar with previous warrants for misdemeanor assault and a history of domestic violence, was charged with capital murder and other offenses following his apprehension after crashing the stolen vehicle.
Much scrutiny has been laid on the system that let James roam free despite clear warning signs, including his prior release on bond contributed by the Texas Organizing Project and multiple warrants out for his arrest. Adding a complex layer to the situation, James's mental health issues and previous discharge from the military for domestic violence issues point toward myriad missed opportunities for intervention.
An IA investigation by the Austin police is anticipated, as well as a criminal investigation in partnership with the Travis County District Attorney's Office.
