A late-night confrontation in downtown Austin turned deadly when an armed man was killed by police after he attempted to enter a bar with a weapon. According to KXAN, the shooting occurred just before midnight on East 6th Street, leaving one suspect dead and three bystanders injured.
Interim Police Chief Robin Henderson, responding to the chaos, said the officers were called to a disturbance of an individual trying to arm themselves at a local watering hole. In a statement obtained by CBS Austin, Henderson said the suspect pointed a gun at officers and, presumably, was shot multiple times after three officers responded. The suspect, whose identity has not been released, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The violence spilled over to innocent onlookers, with three people catching bullets during the gunfire exchange. They were rapidly taken to the hospital, where one battles life-threatening injuries, and the others are said to be in stable condition. The involved officers, with nine to thirteen years of service among them, have since been relegated to administrative duty.
As standard practice, the Austin Police Department is launching dual probes into the incident, featuring a criminal investigation by the Special Investigations Unit and administrative scrutiny by the Internal Affairs Unit. In a nod to transparency, Henderson assured that body camera footage from the involved officers would be shared with the public within ten business days.
