A day of bloodshed unraveled in Austin on December 5, 2023, with police scrambling to multiple violent incidents that left the city reeling from the attacks. The chaos began when an officer from the Austin Independent School District Police Department was shot at around 10:43 a.m., prompting a massive response from law enforcement on Berkman Drive, though no further details on the officer's condition were released, as reported by the Austin Police Department (APD).
Just over an hour later, the APD rushed to the 7300 block of Shadywood Drive, responding to another shooting that fatally wounded two individuals, Emmanuel Pop Ba and Sabrina Rahman. Pop Ba was found dead at the scene, while Rahman succumbed to her injuries after being transported to a hospital. This grim information was disclosed in a separate press release obtained by the APD.
Violence didn't end there; an officer was shot while responding to a burglary call at the 5300 block of Austral Loop at about 6:48 p.m., facing a brazen attack by gunman Shane James, who opened fire immediately, striking the officer multiple times before the officer managed to return fire and find cover, though James was not hit. In this frightful event, two more individuals were found dead at the scene in what became a backdrop to Shane James' arrest on charges of Capital Murder as well as an outstanding assault warrant, according to the Austin Police Department (APD).
