Austin's tamale fervor peaked this weekend as Christmas draws near, with Delicious Tamales locations becoming a hub for holiday tradition. The local favorite, a family and Latina-owned enterprise from San Antonio, reportedly saw a significant uptick in foot traffic as customers swooped in for some eleventh-hour holiday pickups. "So many families' memories and traditions from Christmases past include tamales as a cornerstone," Jeanette Hernandez, a manager at the north Austin outlet of Delicious Tamales, told KXAN.
As Hernandez shared, these masa-wrapped delights have been a generational fixture, with recipes and practices passed down through families, anchoring festive gatherings. A sentiment echoed by patron Michael Shaw who reminisced about family times, "I recall days that we sit around vehicles in the garage and ate tamales off the hood of a car. I remember those days," he revealed in a statement.
While Delicious Tamales prides itself in creating gluten-free options, it's the Sweet Bend tamale that stands apart as the solitary offering containing gluten, a small concession in a menu otherwise uncompromising in its commitment to traditional, filler-free, and preservative-free tamales. Their expansive menu doesn't shy away from other fresh items, including buñuelos, tortillas, and barbacoa, which cultivated a sizable draw for the establishment situated at 1931 E Oltorf St. and 1700 W Parmer Ln, as reported by CBS Austin.
