Austin's future climate champions just got their wings as the city proudly welcomes 33 local youth into the fold of the Austin Youth Climate Equity Council. In a bid to ensure the city's health, inclusivity, and resilience against the relentless climate crisis, these students from across the area have secured their seats at the table where decisions are made. Drawn from each City Council district and spanning 13 local schools, they're gearing up to tackle sustainability and put the city's Climate Equity Plan into action, according to the City of Austin.

Each youngster brings a fresh perspective to the daunting challenges at hand. Ellison, a council member from the Ann Richards School for Young Women, is poised to blend policy with education. "I hope to make effective change through education and policy in Austin—and to help organize youth to not only understand the science but to find solutions to the problem that will affect us for the rest of our lives," Ellison said, as stated in the City of Austin.

Over the course of the school year, these student leaders will delve into everything from sustainability to environmental justice. Through project-based civic learning, they'll aim to formulate climate solutions and spur local sustainability initiatives. Zach Baumer, Austin's interim chief sustainability officer, couldn’t hide his enthusiasm. "It's inspiring to see these young leaders stepping up to engage in local climate action and make a real difference in our community," he relayed his excitement for the wealth of ideas these youths are expected to contribute, as per the City of Austin.
