Austin ISD's Board of Trustees has set the academic calendar for the 2024–25 school year, following a community-based process that sought to reflect the district's diverse values and schedules. Announcing the approval on December 14, the districts' statement revealed key changes, including the addition of extra holidays and professional development days for staff.
The approved calendar introduces new days off for students and staff on Oct. 14 and Jan. 29, while also designating Nov. 1 as a holiday to celebrate Diwali. Aligned with Austin Community College schedules, the updated calendar pushes spring break to March 17–21, 2025, accommodating students who are dual-enrolled. Tailored to meet community and staff inputs, the calendar ensures instructional time remains intact, with the school year kicking off on August 20 and wrapping up on May 29, 2025.
The groundwork for the calendar was set in motion by the District Calendar Task Force, including families, staff, and community partners, who drafted two options. After putting these options to a vote by the broader Austin ISD community, a clear preference emerged. According to figures from the Austin ISD, "59% of the participants preferred calendar option B," tallying 5,926 votes out of a turnout of 10,039 participants. These numbers indicate a surprisingly active engagement from the district's constituency, providing a robust foundation for the trustees' final decision.
School officials have underscored the importance of balancing educational imperatives with cultural and professional development needs throughout this process. The selected calendar, graced with diverse observances and training opportunities, is seen as a gesture toward inclusivity and educational quality, echoing Austin's complex tapestry of cultures and faiths. The final version of the calendar appears after a survey conducted by the district laid out the preferences from the community vote, taken between November and December 1, providing a quantifiable measure for what could become the new normal for Austin's academic year.
