The Austin Police Department's 149th Cadet Class is gearing up to join the force, with 25 soon-to-be officers participating in the ceremonial Chief's Run on Wednesday morning. This time-honored tradition sees the cadets running along South Congress Avenue to the Texas State Capitol, accompanied by Interim Chief of Police Robin Henderson and APD’s Assistant Chiefs. KXAN reports that the event symbolizes unity within both the community and the department as the cadets prepare to be commissioned at their January 5 graduation ceremony.
The new officers are joining APD during a particularly challenging time, as the police department struggles with a serious staffing shortage. With over 300 vacancies currently plaguing the APD, the addition of these officers is seen as crucial. "They've answered the call for duty," Interim Chief Henderson told KVUE.
The APD views every new officer as vital to the department's operations, believing that even a single individual can make a significant difference in maintaining public safety. "Having a little bit of relief and having an additional officer to help support them in their role is tremendous," Henderson said.
The cadets also took the opportunity during the Chief's Run to honor their future comrades-in-arms at the Texas Peace Officers Memorial. This graduating class is set to hit the streets right away, heading out for their first patrols as early as Sunday. With the desperate need for officers, the city can't get these cadets on the beat quickly enough. Henderson emphasized the importance of their role and the much-needed assistance they will provide to a thinly stretched force. KVUE reported that more cadet classes are scheduled throughout the rest of the year, offering some hope that the staffing crisis might eventually subside.
