Last week, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officials made a substantial drug seizure at the Laredo Port of Entry, intercepting over $10 million worth of narcotics hidden within a shipment purportedly containing fresh-cut flowers. According to a KSAT report, CBP officers found the considerable haul during a secondary inspection at the World Trade Bridge.
The bust involved a 2001 Freightliner tractor-trailer that went through a secondary examination prompted by CBP officers; it resulted in the discovery of 164.72 pounds of alleged methamphetamine in powder form, 854.07 pounds of alleged methamphetamine in crystal form, and 165.34 pounds of alleged cocaine, the officers didn't stop there they also employed a canine and non-intrusive inspection system to ensure a thorough search. "CBP is proud of the work our frontline officers do to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our communities," Port Director Alberto Flores told CBP News, "This significant seizure is an example of ongoing operational efforts conducted daily to protect our borders."
With a combined street value of a staggering $10,298,520, the seized narcotics highlight the ongoing battle against the trafficking of illicit drugs across the U.S. borders. The CBP's Laredo Field Office has been at the forefront of this fight, routinely intercepting significant amounts of narcotics destined for distribution within the country.
Following the seizure, the narcotics were confiscated, and Homeland Security Investigations special agents took over the investigation to track down the origins and intended distribution networks of the drugs; this latest interception underlines the critical work of border agents in disrupting the flow of illegal drugs which wreak havoc on communities across the nation.
