Massachusetts' craft beer landscape is briskly set to evolve as two prominent local breweries, Dorchester Brewing Company and Aeronaut Brewing, announced plans to merge into a new entity aptly dubbed the "Tasty Liquid Alliance." As reported by the Boston Globe, the alliance brings together Dorchester Brewing, which launched in 2016, and Aeronaut Brewing, which poured its first beer in 2014.
In a move to potentially bolster growth and innovation in a market that's been anything but hopping lately, Dorchester Brewing's co-founder and CEO, Matt Malloy, is set to take the reins of the combined entity. "We're all looking to grow our respective brands," Aeronaut co-chief executive Ronn Friedlander said, expressing the urgency of adapting to a national trend of consolidation within the industry. According to a statement obtained by the Boston Globe, the merger is targeted to be finalized around a year from now.
The details, as disseminated through social media posts and industry insiders, outline a vision where both breweries maintain their unique identities and continue to serve up their beloved brews. As mentioned in the Instagram post referenced by the Boston Restaurants blog, customers can expect to savor their favorite drinks at the respective taprooms of Dorchester and Aeronaut without any immediate changes.
Yet, the merger is more than a simple blend of beer and branding. It represents a strategic maneuver to merge purchasing and marketing efforts, as well as pooling resources in a move that's sure to streamline production. "This partnership will usher in a new era of innovation in the local craft beer scene," the breweries enthused, signaling a toast to future collaborations. Aeronaut, as part of this alliance, will eventually cease brewing in Everett and shift production to Dorchester's facility in Boston. Current plans are to keep both the Aeronaut taproom in Everett and their smaller brewing operations in Somerville operational into the next year, as per the Boston Restaurants blog.
The joining forces come at a time when craft beer sales have experienced a nationwide plateau after a decade of vigorous growth that came to a head during the COVID-19 pandemic. Malloy's goal, however, isn't just to capture economies of scale; it's about uniting a community of brewers who share a passion for quality and kindred spirits. "We are looking for other people that have a similar passion for product and community," Malloy told the Boston Globe.
Though the merger talks between Dorchester and Aeronaut have headlined, Malloy hints at the bigger picture, revealing that the Tasty Liquid Alliance may soon be on the lookout for additional partners in the realm of craft beverages, not limited to beer but including cider and wine, reflecting an ambitious vision for a diversified consortium of craft beverage artisans. Regardless of the ongoing changes in the industry, Malloy assures that craft beer enthusiasts have a lot to look forward to under this new alliance.
