A teenager was arrested carrying a loaded firearm during broad daylight in Dorchester, authorities said. The 17-year-old, who has not been named due to his juvenile status, was caught by police on Monday after a brief chase on Washington Street, according to a statement by the Boston Police Department.
Members of the Anti-Crime Unit of District B-3 were in pursuit of the suspect, part of a firearm investigation, when they attempted to approach the youngster. The teen, upon spotting the cops, dashed off on foot, triggering a pursuit. An officer stationed at the Dorchester District Court noted the suspect's flight and joined the chase. It was during pursuit that the officers spotted a weapon in the suspect's hand, and they issued multiple commands for him to halt and relinquish the firearm.
The arrest occurred after the suspect, who ran with the weapon still in hand, was finally subdued through the coordinated efforts of the responding officers. The gun recovered was identified as a Ruger 9mm, loaded with a single round in its chamber and accompanied by 15 rounds in the magazine. This piece of evidence elevates the incident from mere trespass to something gravely more concerning — the youthful grip of a mechanism designed to end life kept ready at a moment's notice.
Following the arrest, the juvenile was charged with several offenses, including unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition, possession of a large capacity feeding device, defacement of a firearm serial number, and trespassing. He is set to appear in Dorchester District Court for these charges. The Boston Police Department continues to tackle the prevalence of firearms amongst youth in the city, an issue that repeatedly poses questions to a community eager for answers and a respite from such unnerving events.
