Boxing champ Jermell Charlo is in hot water once again. The fighter known as 'Iron Man' was arrested over the weekend in Texas on misdemeanor assault charges, authorities confirmed to FOX26 Houston. This comes ahead of news that his wife, Chyane Westbrook, has filed for a split from the athlete. Westbrook, who took legal steps to sever her marriage, requested a temporary restraining order against Charlo, as well as their divorce, court documents revealed.
Details on the assault are scant, but the Fort Bend County Sheriff's Office stated that Charlo had been released from custody after his bond was posted. The identity of the victim has not been released to the public. The 33-year-old Houston native was previously acquitted of felony domestic violence charges in 2018, where he was found not guilty by a jury, as reported by Sportskeeda. Despite his legal troubles, Charlo's record in the ring stands at an impressive 35-2-1 with 19 knockouts according to Premier Boxing Champions.
Charlo has recently suffered a professional setback, having lost to champion Canelo Alvarez in a high-profile bout last September. The defeat was by unanimous decision in the final round, marking a tough period for the pugilist both professionally and personally. Yet, Charlo's prowess as a boxer is significant, as he holds the WBA and WBC 154-pound titles, despite having forfeited his other titles upon moving up in weight class for the fight against Alvarez.
The boxer's legal woes do not start nor end with the recent charges. Charlo had a previous run-in with the law in 2018, when he was accused of choking his former girlfriend and dragging her hair. Though he was released after posting bail, this was not the last of his troubles. He faced a terroristic threat charge earlier last year following an altercation where he allegedly threatened to kill a cousin, as per a report from TMZ Sports, further complicating the narrative of a celebrated sportsman whose life outside the ring has marred his career inside it.
