Cypress Waterfront Italian Spot Passerella Closes, Ending Four-Year Run at Towne Lake

Passerella Ristorante & Wine Bar has closed its waterfront location at the Boardwalk at Towne Lake in Cypress, shutting down for good on Sunday after four years in business. The Italian restaurant, known for handmade pasta and seafood, sat next to sister concept The Union Kitchen at 9945 Barker Cypress Rd., and its closure marks the end of the brand entirely, since its second location in the Washington Corridor reportedly shut down last year.

A spokesperson for the Boardwalk at Towne Lake confirmed to Chron that Passerella closed on Sunday, Aug. 23. The restaurant shared a closure announcement on social media but gave no details about the decision and no final service date, according to the same report. Passerella first opened in the Cypress shopping center in 2022, then expanded to a second Washington Corridor location the following year before that outpost reportedly closed in 2025.

Weekend Crowds Couldn't Carry the Week

Paul Miller, co-owner of parent company Gr8 Plate Hospitality, told Chron that Passerella's weekends were great but its weekdays were not as strong. Miller expanded on that dynamic in comments to CultureMap Houston, explaining that customers tended to see the restaurant's elevated, white-tablecloth atmosphere as a special-occasion destination rather than a routine weeknight option — a perception problem that undercut revenue even as weekend business held up. Miller also said he came away from the venture with valuable insights regarding price points and tablecloth service models, per CultureMap.

When Passerella launched in Cypress in 2022, its kitchen was led by Executive Chef Ed Roberts, a veteran of Houston fine-dining institutions Tony's and Masraff's, according to CultureMap. The restaurant built its identity around scratch-made pasta and seafood, an ambitious formula for a suburban strip along the water.

A Broader Pullback for Gr8 Plate Hospitality

Passerella's shutdown is the second closure this year for Gr8 Plate Hospitality, following the January exit of Jax on the Tracks in the Garden Oaks neighborhood after just a three-month run. The company also closed its Katy location of The Union Kitchen at 9920 Gaston Rd. on January 11, ending a six-year run that began during the height of the pandemic in June 2020, as Hoodline previously reported. With Passerella gone, Gr8 Plate Hospitality's active portfolio now consists of three Union Kitchen locations in Memorial, Cypress and Kingwood, two Jax Grill locations in Bellaire and Shepherd, and the Vine Memorial wine bar, according to CultureMap's August reporting. The company was founded by husband-and-wife restaurateurs Paul and Doris Miller, who were named Restaurateurs of the Year by the Greater Houston Restaurant Association in 2018. Their flagship Union Kitchen concept first opened on Bellaire Boulevard in 2010 before that original location closed in October 2020 as the company shifted its focus toward suburban expansion.

Diversifying Beyond Full-Service Dining

The group has also branched into retail wine in recent years, opening Vine Memorial near Houston's Energy Corridor in January 2024. That 2,544-square-foot wine bar, housed in the former Memorial Wine Cellar space on Katy Freeway, offers more than 200 global wines curated alongside Master Sommelier Guy Stout. It's part of a pattern of the company shedding upscale or experimental concepts while holding onto more casual, neighborhood-oriented brands like Jax Grill and Union Kitchen.

Security has also been a concern for the company. In February 2025, Miller publicly raised alarms after his restaurant group's venues experienced multiple break-in attempts, including a glass-shattering burglary attempt at Vine Memorial, according to KHOU 11 News. Houston police logged approximately 850 restaurant burglaries in 2024, the station reported at the time.

A Competitive Waterfront Corridor

The Boardwalk at Towne Lake is a 150,000-square-foot commercial development built along a 300-acre recreational lake within the larger 2,400-acre Towne Lake master-planned community, according to developer Caldwell Companies. The development includes marina parking with more than 20 boat slips, letting residents reach waterfront restaurants by boat rather than car. Commercial traffic along nearby Barker Cypress Road exceeds 66,000 vehicles daily, but the district now faces fresh competition from nearby developments like Bridgeland Central, which began opening new dining and lifestyle tenants earlier this year, per Caldwell Companies.

Cypress diners have watched the Boardwalk's restaurant lineup shift throughout 2026, with tequila-focused newcomer Galiana's eyeing the market as Hoodline reported in December, and Coco Crepes opening a second Cypress location at nearby Elyson Town Center in February. Passerella's exit leaves one less white-tablecloth option along the water, even as the broader Towne Lake corridor continues drawing new food and beverage concepts.
