Brooding skies and the promise of rain are set to usher Atlantans into a brisk start for the week, as forecasted showers aim to give way to sunnier skies but colder nights. The National Weather Service reports a 50 percent chance of showers today, mostly tapering off before noon, with temperatures peaking at a chilly 54 degrees. The steely blend of northeast and northwest winds could see gusts reaching up to 20 mph, signaling that winter is, indeed, not quite finished with the city yet.
Tonight, the clouds persist, though showers do not, while temperatures are predicted to dip to a low of around 39 degrees. The northwest wind will show little mercy and is expected to continue gusting strongly, potentially reaching up to 30 mph. As we head into Monday, the mercury struggles to climb, topping out near 53 degrees under a mostly sunny sky. The perseverance of the northwest wind will not falter; it is projected to fiercely gust as high as 30 mph again.
The Weather Service forecasts a sharp drop in temperature on Monday night, with lows plummeting to a shivering 27 degrees. The clear conditions do little to insulate as frost spreads its icy fingers across the city. Tuesday will do little to warm the spirits, with sunny skies but highs only near 44 degrees and northwest winds occasionally gusting to 20 mph.
Residents should prepare for frosty mornings through mid-week, with widespread frost predicted after 2 a.m. and before 9 a.m. both Wednesday and Thursday. Despite this, both days should eventually warm to more agreeable conditions; a mostly sunny Wednesday sees a high of around 51, while Thursday should enjoy a slightly warmer high near 57 degrees. As Friday beckons, temperatures might reach near 59 degrees, though clouds will be on the increase, setting the stage for a 20 percent chance of weekend showers with highs persisting around 59 degrees.
