Belmont's bakery scene just got a little sweeter with the opening of Butternut Bakehouse on Leonard Street. The successful bakehouse, which originated in Arlington, has officially branched out, breathing new life into the former Craft Beer Cellar's space. According to a post by Leah Klein of City Living Boston, the bakery is now serving up a variety of goods including baked treats, sandwiches, pizza, along with coffee and tea beverages to the residents of Belmont.
Suzana, the sweet savant behind the operation, has taken her love for unpretentious and natural-tasting pastries from her kitchen to a flourishing culinary business. Drawing inspiration from her Malaysian roots where desserts are typically not baked, she turned her passion into a skill in New York before bringing her expertise to Boston. From her humble beginnings working over small batches in her home kitchen in 2016, the Bakehouse has expanded into a local institution.
Butternut Bakehouse prides itself on the authenticity and homely touch they bring to every item on the menu. In an intimate tale of her pastry pilgrimage divulged on the bakery's website, Suzana admits, "Everything I learned about baking happened as an adult in a foreign land after being jaded with a career in banking." She went on to hone her craft at the Institute of Culinary Education in New York, which paved the way for her ventures in various restaurants and bakeries, including a return stint in Kuala Lumpur.
The heart of Butternut’s philosophy is serving up comfort and gratitude through their food, intending to wrap customers in a figurative warm hug – the promise of flaky pastries being an added treat. The sentiment shared through the Butternut Bakehouse's website is clear: the Bakehouse isn’t just a bakery, it’s a culinary haven designed to evoke love and comfort through every bite.
For those hungry for a taste of Butternut Bakehouse's homespun creations, they can now visit the new location in Belmont Center at 51 Leonard Street, Belmont, MA, 02478. Garnishing the neighborhood with its rich aromas and delicious offerings, it’s set to become a beloved haunt for locals and visitors alike.
