A Ramsey man has been slapped with a 130-month prison sentence after a spree of violent carjackings that terrorized residents. Jordan James Smith, 27, will spend over a decade behind bars, followed by three years of supervised release, and has been ordered to pay a restitution of $1,918.28, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
Smith's heinous acts began on January 3, 2022, when he forcefully commandeered a Nissan Juke at gunpoint, pushing the firearm into the owner's torso. According to court documents, to later on brazenly use the same stolen vehicle to test drive, and ultimately snatch, a black Maserati. The scenario was laid bare: Smith threatened the Nissan owner stating, "I've got a [expletive] gun," and demanded, "Give me everything you have and get out of the car," as per the Justice Department,
However, Smith's crime wave didn't stop there. He, along with co-defendant Carson Thomas McCoy, 22, and other associates, broke into a car dealership on February 3, 2022. A GMC Acadia was among several vehicles they lifted, which later McCoy crashed after running a stop sign. Smith, after aiding McCoy's escape from the crash scene, proceeded to rob the driver of that vehicle at gunpoint.
Pleading guilty to two counts of carjacking in August, the sentencing handed down earlier this week in U.S. District Court by Judge John R. Tunheim marks a close to part of this harrowing tale. Smith's accomplice, McCoy, awaits his reckoning, with a sentencing date set for January 3, 2024.
