Chicago Activists Urge Cook County to Probe Wrongful Convictions Linked to Retired Detective

Families and activists convened outside the Leighton Criminal Court Building to appeal to Cook County State's Attorney Kim Foxx. They are urging a thorough review of cases linked to retired Sgt. Brian Forberg is accused of witness coercion in wrongful convictions. Forberg's methods, particularly in securing convictions, have drawn severe criticism.

She acknowledged the flaws in the justice system and the anguish of meeting with those wrongfully convicted. "We're tired," said Lakisha Jackson, whose brother is serving a lengthy sentence.

Supreme Court Justice P. Scott Neville highlighted the need for urgent corrective action and an intensive investigation into such allegations. 

Activists and lawyers emphasized the conflict of interest due to Forberg's marriage to an assistant state's attorney, which complicates the case review, as noted by the Chicago Tribune. Special prosecutors are now reexamining the cases connected to Forberg's actions. The National Registry of Exonerations reports that Illinois had an alarming rate of wrongful convictions in 2022, with a rate of false confessions twice the national average.
