It's back to business for drivers and local foot traffic in Round Rock as Chisholm Trail Road swings open its gates after a considerable construction hiatus. According to a recent update provided by the City of Round Rock, the key thoroughfare that had been shuttered for the betterment of the Heritage Trail West has resumed its role in the city's daily bustle, much to the relief of commuters.

The roadway, which had seen closures stretching from just south of Sunset Drive to north of RM 620, was supposed to be a temporary inconvenience for about 90 days. As reported by the City of Round Rock, utility skirmishes not anticipated in the original plan forced an extension of the closure until December 15. The additional time was crucial, giving workers the room needed for handling underground utilities and hammering together a new pedestrian bridge, both pivotal pieces of the much-anticipated Heritage Trail West.

"The design of the bridge serves as a link between generations of Round Rock residents," detailed a city statement. Used back in the 1800s by wagons, this revamped crossing is pegged to be a focal point in the city's evolving landscape, offering a safe passage across Chisholm Trail Road and Brushy Creek. Further enhancing the site, a viewing platform over the historical 'round rock' is on the cards, poised to be a new vantage point for both visitors and locals alike.

In a boost to the area's development, Round Rock was also on the receiving end of a generous $6.3 million grant by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), funneled towards the myriad of upgrades slated for Heritage Trail. This pile of cash is part of a statewide push by TxDOT to plow funds into various bike and pedestrian-centric projects, advancing mobility beyond the usual tarmac treaders.

The city's not just stopping at Heritage Trail West, though, with shovels hitting dirt earlier this year on Lake Creek Trail. Following a nod of approval from voters in the May 2023 G.O. Bonds referendum, the trail aims to stretch a 10-foot-wide track from Round Rock West Park all the way to Centennial Plaza. Not to mention, a pedestrian underpass at IH-35 and a bridge commandeering Lake Creek are part of the planned garnishing. Amenities, yet to be colored in detail, are expected to pave the way for further recreational activities along the trail's reach.
